Health workers in Osun State have been trained on how to provide quality health care for patients across all health facilities in the state.
The training, sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Jhpiego Nigeria in conjunction with the Osun State Government, was also to build the capacity of the health workers in their daily activities.
Speaking during the training in Osogbo, the consultant to Jhpiego Nigeria, ThankGod Nwabueze, urged the state government to make available, all necessary equipment that will assist the health workers in the state to provide quality health care.
Nwabueze noted that the state needed to own the project to achieve the desired outcome.
He said, "Training the capacity of the state especially the secondary and tertiary health professionals so that they would imbibe the skills to ensure that even in their daily activities as health care providers, they ensure quality across the continuum of care.
"We know that quality of care is very necessary if we must achieve the desired outcome. The bottom line is to build the capacity of the state and let them own the project and go to their respective healthcare facilities and ensure quality of care.
"Quality of care framework is broadly categorised into two. The first is the provision of care while the second one is the experience of care. For the state government, it is all about leadership. There should be action, learning and accountability. The government can come in and own the process.
"They should take it up from here and encourage a good environment for the health workers, provide necessary materials, training and visit to health facilities to ensure that the issue of quality care is being implemented and where there are gaps, the government should do the needful."
Speaking earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Isiaka Adekunle promised that the training will be stepped down to all health workers in the state.
Adekunle who noted that the state is doing well in its health indices, urged the participants to utilise the training to improve themselves in their line of duties.
He said, "The workshop is a project being organised in conjunction with the state. The major aim is to look at how we can improve the quality of health care services in Osun State from where it is now to where it is supposed to be.
"The main focus is on the patients. How we improved our relationship with them. You know when people come to the hospital, they come with different issues, so, when they come, their experience should be something good.
"We will inaugurate the quality improvement teams in all our centres for those that do not have before. We are going to step down the training to other health care providers so that everybody can know about this important project.
"Osun State has been doing well in a number of health indices. How infant mortality rate has improved. We need to keep this up. We need to keep the infant mortality down to as low as possible."
