The advice was given given by media practitioners at a fireside chat programme organized by students of Foutain University, Osogbo, Osun State, recently.
According to the practitioners, youths nowadays does not want to overwork themselves, hoping that their earnings would be way above the energy put into their
"Today, young journalism enthusiasts cherish the financial juice that comes with the profession than putting in the hard work that will eventually bring monetary value.
According to them, "Journalism, like other professions, requires the stages of self-development to acquire value. It is when you've gained value that you become relevant. And with relevance and value, the financial juice seamlessly comes.
"Therefore, value and relevance bring money and self-development brings value and relevance. As undergraduates, or better still, this generation does not want to overwork, or maybe the narration is they want their earnings to be way above the energy put into the work. Well, like the practitioners said, it doesn’t work that way in the actual sense.
"Journalism is argued to be either an art or a skill. If it’s an art, then everyone should be able to do it, but if it’s a skill that needs to be learnt, then more effort is required.
"Some people are gifted, but realizing their potential and knowing the path to thread could require a lot. Surprisingly, this generation isn’t bothered about journalism being an art or skill, they just want a fast-paying job as quick as it can ever be.
"It’s your outstanding ability, perseverance in some cases, and value-inclined personality that you’ve built that’ll always make you the best among others.
"There are lots more to practising, it goes beyond limiting yourself to an environment and assuming you’re good, thrive to fit in competitions, and compete with others.
"Move out of your shell, write, write and practice more, do not be bias, there would always be memories, good and bad, no work is ever sweet without stress, news personalities put in work before becoming who they are today, big people worked hard before gaining the recognition today.
Build your brand with lots of morals, values and principles, money would come to you if you do not stop working hard".
